Well, link building is definitely one of the main aspects of SEO, but we are after quality that will benefit our clients, and not the numbers regardless of the quality. A potential client claimed that for $500 a month he can have hundreds of links built using services that sell links. I agree, he can get those numbers of links, but the question is what the quality of those links will be. So here is why you should never go down the underground world of link buying.
Link Buying is Bad for You
Before I get further into this subject, I want to state clearly that I do not approve of link buying if that was not clear by now. So, there are three most common ways to buy links. The first one is from people you know, this is the safest way and maybe the only way that you will get some quality from your investment. But you can consider this as advertising; it’s a gray subject and one that is hard to notice by search engines.
There are two more ways; one is to use the link selling services. There are plenty of websites that advertise they sell links, even though Google disapproves of that. And the last one is the slums of forums like digital point, and plenty of other internet marketing and SEO forums. Most of these forums claim they don’t support link buying and selling, but yet they have a special category for this sort of stuff. Basically you post what you need and you get personal messages with offers.
So what can you expect from link sellers and forum sellers? Low quality in 99% of the cases. What makes these links low quality is the theme of the website, design, topic, content, and most of all number of outbound links as well as the link neighborhood. Your link will be placed between Casino and Forex or even Adult related links. So what benefit can you get from a PR4 website when your “Culinary Recipes” link is on a page with 100 outbound links that talks about technology but at the same time links to gambling, gaming and adult sites?
This is what you will get 100% from link sellers, on forums you can actually choose, but you will spend days before you find a site that has less than 20 outbound links, is topic related and the link neighborhood matches your needs. These are all bad things for you, and we didn’t even brush the subject of getting hit by Google!

Link Building vs Link Buying
Link buying is definitely not that easy, if you want to buy a good link you will have to spend a good amount of money to make sure that you are buying from a trustworthy site that has everything going to your advantage. So is it really worth it? You can buy a good link, one link, for let’s say $100 or up, depending on the PR. But for that amount of money you can have someone write plenty of articles for you that will end up on several respected domains like HubPages, Ezine Article and Squidoo. You can even go the legit way and actually create a banner and place an advertisement for one month on a high traffic page of an online magazine. There are many things you can do to get better results for that amount of money. One of those is paying for a link building specialist or SEO consultant.
Link building takes time, results come after a while, but when done right the results can be achieved with a handful of links, not bulk! I totally agree with your views there. Link buying is strictly no-no. If your website escapes these link buying tactics, it won't be long before the search engines catch up and finds you. Legitimate link building is hard work.
Zarco, another great hub. Couple of questions, what about taking the time to find high ranking relevant blogs rich in keywords with a decent PR, say 2 - 3. If you leave comments in those sites with a link. Do feel this is a waste of time? Or do you feel these good back links?
@lostwillee, in regards to the link value when considering rankings, these backlinks have little value, but they do have value in building relationship, bringing in direct traffic and getting your posts indexed faster. When going for comment links, it's about making a connection with the author and his readers, not about creating backlinks, going for backlinks is doing it the wrong way!
That's because SEO is not a science! It is subjective every second. The key is to choose keywords that are common.
Excellent information but want to say that there are many way of buy links and i think that if you will buy a links from reputed website and he is placing your link in contents or other suitable area then it can help you lots because in this format search engines can not understand that its paid links. So try to get always natural links because if search engines will detect that you are buying links or selling links then it can be main reason big penalty.

You could say that paying for a banner on a reputable site is advertisement, even if it contains a link. I don't think Google will penalise for that, especially if the site linking to us is especially reputable.
Buying links from places such as digital point and these spammy forums can be hugely detrimental to your SEO efforts.

Most kinds of link building are considered Black hat in Google's eyes. They want links to happen naturally.
A good place to get spammy links would be fiverr.com - Just kidding these links will do more harm than good there but they are advertised their none the less ..
I agree that buying backlinks is not the way to go. SEO link building should be a natural process with a combination of do follow and no follow backlinks. Just my 2 cents.
Hey! Quite informative hub. I joined voltrank a few weeks ago. I your own judgement, what do you think of their link building service? Have you heard negative stuff about it? I had my site ranking at number 20 on google and when i started adding links from their site i am now at number 27...is this a sign from above that i should stop?

Thx. Everything I read on this adds to my limited understanding of the subject. I wish there was one verified, comprehensive mthod of SEO rather than the millions of opinions on the subject. Then again, that's what makes the world go round.
