Canon S Series Returns

What do you see when you look at this digital camera to the right? You see a small black object not more than 4 inches long, and then you notice that it is actually a camera, very small and sophisticated digital camera. Canon PowerShot S90 Digital Camera is the resurrector of the famous Canon “S” series. If you haven’t heard about the Canon “S” that can only mean that you have interest in the digital camera market in less than four years. Last model from Canon “S” series was S80 and it was released in 2005 and was retired shortly after in 2006. “S” series were dead until recently when Canon decided to join the race for affordable pocket camera and released new model, S90. It doesn’t look that much like its predecessors from the “S” series but that’s not that strange considering the fact that it was five years since the last release in the series.

Powershot S90 Specs

Canon PowerShot S90 Digital Camera even features a unique feature for Canon digital cameras. You must be wondering what that is. It’s a brand new feature called Lens Control Ring. It is positioned in the base of the Lens and it resembles aperture rings on analog camera lenses. It is very easy to use in more than pleasant matter. It’s fully customizable and improves already great control interface of this camera. Here is an official list of key features of this camera:

Lens Control Ring
• 10 million pixels sensor
• RAW shooting
• Fast f/2.0-4.9 maximum aperture range
• Lens covering the classic 28-105mm range
• Dual Anti-Noise System (high sensitivity sensor and Digic 4 noise reduction)
• 3.0 inch PureColor II LCD
• Optical Image Stabilization
• Smarter Scene Detection
• Low Light mode
DIGIC 4 image processor
• HD output

This list proves that Canon didn’t just make another “S” series camera, but that they designed a brand new camera and incorporated all of their latest technology in it. Sensor with 10mp will be more than enough for any enthusiast out there who would like to have a small but reliable easy to use camera. This camera, as I mentioned earlier has excellent control interface. First, it has considerable manual controls, and the menu is highly customizable which combined with fully customizable control ring makes this camera one of the most user friendly cameras today.

Body design is also top class work but it does have a flaw in it. Canon wanted to make extremely serious and minimalistic design (one of the reasons there is no optical viewfinder), body of this camera is made from the combination of metal and plastic but the problem is it doesn’t have any kind of grip on it so if you are using the camera with only one hand, it is possible to send it flying across the room. Still this is one of the best pocket cameras in the world today and there is no question about it. If you are wondering if it is worth buying it, is definitely is! And the price for this camera is just right, you can check on price compare sites to see various offers.

One word of caution, these cameras aren't rugged. Consider getting the warrantee. We had a Powershot SD900 and dropped it, and that was the end of it!

I think I mentioned that in the post, if you drop it you can look for a new camera. No, I said you will send it flying across the room, but considering the benefits and advantages of this camera, not to mention a very cheap price, this is a camera for anyone. you can always go for EOS 50D, about $2,000, but that is if you are a professional photographer. you know what they say, you get what you paid for!, Find me a camera in this price range that won't fall apart when you drop it besides Olympus Tough, which I already cover with one Hub, but comparing the two this one has 10 times better characteristics. Everything has it's benefits and faults!
