Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III is seventh digital camera from Canon EOS-1D series. The first model from this series, Canon EOS-1D was announced in September 2001, since then, series was improved considerably with every model and finally, in August 2007 EOS-1Ds Mark III was announced. This camera is the first in this series to go over the twenty megapixel barrier with its 36x24 mm full frame sensor. Maximum photo resolution this camera can shoot is 5616x3744 pixels. The sensor that makes this possible has increased light gathering efficiency by reducing the space between micro lenses. This technology provides sensitivity up to ISO 3200.

The ‘s’ suffix in the name of this model indicates the subcategory with full frame sensor. There are two more previous models in this subcategory, EOS-1Ds and EOS-1Ds Mark II. This subcategory always introduced enormous improvement in each revision and was intended only for hard-core professionals that are looking for the best there is on the DSLR market. Beside the increased resolution, Canon has pushed continuous shooting up to five frames per second (Eos-1Ds Mark II has only four frames per second). This is provided with two DIGIC III image processors. Mark III also features larger screen (3 inch LCD) with Live View, a fourteen-bit A/D converter and fourteen-bit RAW files, UDMA Compact Flash Support and a whole range of features inherited from the EOS-1D Mark III.

When you look at Canon EOS1Ds Mark III, at first glance you might actually think it’s identical to its predecessor Mark II, but if you look closer you will notice wide variety of subtle changes. Most of these changes are on the back of the camera. Larger screen now takes more space on the back of the camera and a lot of controls had to be moved around. Larger prism made this model a bit taller than the previous one and there is new expansion terminal with the Wi-Fi connector on the right side of the camera. There are no major changes in operating this camera so this will surely meet positive critic from professionals, especially the ones that already used the previous models from this series.

When it comes to body design, Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III is a masterpiece. Environmentally sealed body is made from durable and high quality materials. Both hand grips are designed flawlessly. Even with a couple of extra lenses installed this camera will feel secure and balanced in your hands despite its considerable weight. Viewfinder on this model is one of the largest there are on the DSLR market today and using it is one beautiful experience. Active of the 45 AF points glow red once the AF is locked (Auto Focus). With the latest firmware you can use the multi-controller to quickly switch focus points. This feature greatly improves and speeds up focus point selection.

Canon has made a camera that is truly a wonderful addition to the professional camera market with this model and you should definitely consider making it a part of your arsenal. I know that price may be a problem with this one, so try price compare sites for the best price on the market.

Good informative hub about cameras. I had a EOS 1N (the film type), and had years enjoying using it, especially the viewfinder where one can see through it like normal sight, not sure whether the latest 1D MkIII has the same feature. Am not a professional photographer, but like such cameras, sad part is, it's getting too expensive to own one now.

Yes, it does have that feature, it kept all of the recognizing traits of its predecessors, but you are right, this one is too expensive. Well, professional photographers probably wouldn't agree with me, but giving $7,000 or more for a digital camera is way beyond my budget!

Yes I totally agree with you Zarko, I don't understand how they can condone $7,000 for a camera when there are models that produce the same quality from a fraction of the price.
